The Porziuncola and the Franciscan Jubilee
Our journey can only begin here: Santa Maria degli Angeli: the village that grew up around an immense Basilica. But the true treasure lies within, beneath the great dome.
This is where we will greet you upon your arrival on the afternoon of August 3rd! We will be ready to welcome you, and you can pick up your pass and your Go! Kit there. And all of this will happen right in front of the great Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
The heart of the basilica is the Porziuncola. A small stone church that Francis restored with his own hands and where he loved to return to pray. Here the fraternity of the friars was born. Here Clare consecrated her life. Here Francis dreamed of a simple, close, and merciful Church.
When you enter the Porziuncola in August, perhaps you will understand one thing: the smallest places often hold the greatest revolutions.
And this is precisely the heart of GO! The Porziuncola is not a place of the past. It is still one of the most vibrant places in Assisi, embodying the concrete experience of Francis: fraternity, listening, living the Gospel, and peace.
It is no coincidence that 2026 is a special year: Pope Leo XIV has proclaimed a special Year of Saint Francis, a sort of continuation of the Jubilee just celebrated, to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Francis’s death (1226-2026).
Until January 10, 2027, by visiting the Porziuncola or other Franciscan sites in a spirit of pilgrimage, it will be possible to receive the gift of a Plenary Indulgence, experiencing Confession, the Eucharist, and prayer according to the Pope’s intentions.
It is an invitation to start anew! For Francis, mercy was concrete life. And perhaps for us too, in a time full of turmoil and division, Assisi continues to say the same thing: peace begins in the heart.
